Web3D Consortium announces X3D v4 ISO/IEC standardization of 3D in HTML5

X3D version 4 for 3D in HTML5 provides a fully scalable, interactive 3D environment building on the X3DOM implementation with backwards compatibility. Upon completion, the X3D version 4 specification will be submitted for ratification to ISO/IEC for international standardization, interoperability, long-term archival stability and royalty free use. Targeted delivery date for public draft is December 2015.

Mountain View, California (PRWEB) 27 July 2015

The Web3D Consortium announces that Extensible 3D (X3D) version 4 development continues the evolution of open, royalty-free ISO standards for 3D graphics on the Web. This new version provides a fully interactive and scalable environment, providing interoperability with long-term archival stability, compatible and integrated with HTML5 and web methodologies.  Backwards compatibility includes existing Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) and X3D scenes built from as early as 1997. Public availability is expected December 2015, and the specification will later be submitted for international standardization.  More information on X3D version 4 is maintained at http://www.Web3D.org/x3d-version-4

X3D version 4 progress builds on the X3DOM [http://x3dom.org] open-source player by Web3D Consortium member Fraunhofer IGD [http://www.igd.fraunhofer.de]. X3DOM integrates interactive declarative X3D content within HTML5 browsers without plugins. This enables authors to easily integrate any X3D scene into any HTML5 web page.

Dr. Johannes Behr, Program Manager for X3DOM notes “X3D was always for the web, but the plugin integration model was limited. Recent advances in W3C technologies allow more complete integration. The X3D scene graph is now part of the web page, which enables web authors to operate on 3D scene elements directly.”

Dr. Don Brutzman, X3D Working Group co-chair says these are strategic opportunities.  “For 20 years, putting scalable 3D on the Web has been challenging.  Soon authors and companies can publish any 3D content they like, without barriers, using X3D version 4.  Forward-looking individuals and companies can gain serious new advantages.”

Leonard Daly, X3D Working Group co-chair says “X3D version 4 adds interactive animated 3D objects to HTML5 web pages. Easy creation and re-use of 3D graphics allows more people to create and use 3D graphics throughout the Web.”

All Web3D standards are royalty free for any use and publicly available at [http://www.Web3D.org/standards]. The X3D working group invites participation from developers and the 3D community in this fundamentally important effort.
